NORCET (Nursing Officer Recruitment Common Eligibility Test) is a national-level competitive examination conducted by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, for the recruitment of Nursing Officers in various AIIMS institutions

BSc Nursing, / Post BSc Nursing
Must be registered as a Nurse & Midwife with the state/ Indian Nursing Council

GNM with 2 Years Experience in a 50 or more Bedded hospital
(NB: Experience must be obtained after completing the course and registration with the Nursing Council)

30 yrs, Age relaxation applicable for reserved categories

NORCET Preliminary Exam – Complete Pattern & Rules Explained
If you are preparing for NORCET, it is very important to clearly understand how the Preliminary Stage (Stage I) works. Many candidates get confused about its structure and qualifying criteria. Let’s break it down in a simple and clear manner.
1️⃣ Nature of the NORCET Preliminary Exam
The NORCET Preliminary exam is only a qualifying examination.
This means:
- It is conducted to shortlist candidates for Stage II (NORCET Mains).
- The marks scored in Stage I will NOT be used for final merit ranking.
- Only those who qualify will be eligible to appear for the Main examination.
2️⃣ Duration of the Examination
- Total exam duration: 90 minutes
The entire exam is completed within this time frame, and strict sectional timing applies.
3️⃣ Exam Pattern
- Total Questions: 100 MCQs
- Total Marks: 100
- Each question carries 1 mark
- Each question has 4 answer options
Question Distribution:
- 20 MCQs – General Knowledge & Aptitude
- 80 MCQs – Nursing subjects (as per essential qualification syllabus)
So, your primary focus should definitely remain on core nursing subjects.
4️⃣ Negative Marking
- 1/3 mark will be deducted for every wrong answer.
This means blind guessing can reduce your overall score. Attempt strategically.
5️⃣ Sectional Format (Very Important)
The question paper is divided into 5 sections.
- Each section contains 20 questions
- Each section is allotted 18 minutes
- Total time: 18 × 5 = 90 minutes
Important Rule:
You can only attempt questions from the currently active section.
Once 18 minutes for a section is over:
- That section will automatically close.
- You cannot go back to it.
- The next section will automatically open.
There is no option to revisit previous sections.
6️⃣ Strict Section Navigation Rules
- Only one section will be visible at a time.
- You cannot view or answer questions from other sections.
- Once a section closes, it will never reopen.
- The exam will be automatically submitted after 90 minutes.
So make sure you:
- Attempt all possible questions in the active section.
- Review marked or skipped questions within the same section before the time ends.
Time management is extremely critical in this exam.
7️⃣ Qualifying Criteria (Percentile-Based)
The NORCET Preliminary qualifying marks are based on percentiles, not fixed marks.
Here is the category-wise qualifying percentile:
- UR / EWS – 50th percentile
- OBC – 45th percentile
- SC / ST – 40th percentile
For PWBD Candidates:
An additional 5 percentile relaxation is given across all categories.
So the qualifying percentile becomes:
- UR/EWS-PWBD – 45 percentile
- OBC-PWBD – 40 percentile
- SC/ST-PWBD – 35 percentile
As per DoPT guidelines, the same relaxed standard applies uniformly to all benchmark disability candidates. No additional relaxation beyond this will be granted.
Final Advice for Aspirants
- Focus more on Nursing subjects (80% weightage).
- Practice sectional time management.
- Avoid unnecessary guessing due to negative marking.
- Understand that Stage I is only qualifying — your real competition begins in Stage II.
